Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a talking therapy which, like counselling, offers a supportive environment in which to explore particular emotional difficulties. CBT works in a different way to counselling and therefore would be more suited to working with different difficulties. EMDR is further approach which compliments CBT well and hence can be offered as an alternative or in combination with CBT.
CBT is a structured therapy which has a strong evidence base for treating difficulties such as Stress, Anxiety, Depression and Eating Disorders. It is often recommended by GPs due to its strong research backing. Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is another evidence based therapy which is primarily used to work through traumatic incidents which could lead to Post Traumatic Stress Disorders (PTSD).
